SkillWood — Privacy Policy
This Privacy Policy explains what information the SkillWood app (“SkillWood”, “the App”, “the Service”) collects, why it collects it, who it is shared with, and what control you have over it. Please read it together with our Terms of Use, which govern your use of the Service.
1. Who we are (Data Controller)
The controller of your personal data is:
THE BIG BOX SRL
Corso Savona 121
14100 Asti (AT)
Italy
Product support: support@skillwood.ai
Company: support@thebigbox.agency · https://thebigbox.agency
Privacy requests: support@skillwood.ai
We have not appointed a Data Protection Officer, as we are not required to under Article 37 GDPR. Privacy requests are handled directly by the contacts above.
2. Summary
| What we collect | Why | Do we link it to your identity? |
|---|---|---|
| Photos you submit to the AI tools (wood scan, appraisal, repair, project generation) | To return the requested result | No — processed without an account identifier and not stored on our servers after the result is returned |
| Subscription and purchase status (transaction identifier, product, renewal state) | To unlock and restore paid features | Pseudonymously, via an app-generated identifier |
| Device and diagnostic data (device model, OS and app version, language, crash/error data, IP address in server logs) | To keep the App working, fix crashes, prevent abuse | No |
| Support messages you send us (email, in-app chat) | To answer you | Yes, if you identify yourself |
We do not sell or share your personal data, we do not use it for advertising, we do not track you across other companies’ apps or websites, and we do not use the Apple Advertising Identifier (IDFA). SkillWood therefore does not present an App Tracking Transparency prompt.
3. Information we collect
3.1 Photos and other input you submit to the AI tools
SkillWood offers camera-based and AI-assisted features — for example identifying a wood species, appraising a finished piece, suggesting a repair, or generating a project from a description and reference photos. When you use these features, the photo you select or capture and the text you type are sent to our servers and forwarded to our AI processing provider so that a result can be produced and returned to you.
- Photos are transmitted over an encrypted connection (TLS).
- Photos are processed transiently. They are not stored in our database and are not retained on our servers after the result has been returned, other than in short-lived technical logs used for error diagnosis (see Section 7).
- Your photos and prompts are not used to train our models or those of our AI provider.
- Camera access is requested only when you use a camera feature, and only after you grant permission in iOS. You can withdraw it at any time in iOS Settings → SkillWood.
Please do not submit photos that contain faces, documents, or other personal or sensitive information — the features are designed for photographs of wood, tools, and finished items.
3.2 Subscription and purchase data
SkillWood Pro is sold as an auto-renewable subscription through Apple In-App Purchase. Apple processes the payment. We never receive or store your card number, bank details, or billing address.
We (and our subscription management provider) receive limited transaction metadata — the product purchased, the transaction and original transaction identifiers, currency and price tier, trial or introductory-offer status, renewal and expiration dates, and a pseudonymous app-generated user identifier — so that we can unlock paid features, restore purchases on your devices, and measure aggregate subscription performance.
3.3 Device and diagnostic data
To operate and maintain the Service, we process technical data such as device model, operating system version, app version, device language and region, general performance and error data, and the IP address contained in our server request logs. This data is not used to build a profile of you.
3.4 Support communications
If you write to us at support@skillwood.ai or use the in-app chat, we process what you send us — typically your email address or chat identifier, the content of your message, and any attachments — in order to answer you and keep a record of the request.
3.5 Data that stays on your device
Your saved projects, favorites, scan history, workspace items, photos of your own creations, measurement preferences, and similar personal settings are stored locally on your device. We do not upload them to our servers. If you use iCloud device backup, they may be included in your own Apple backup, which is governed by Apple’s privacy policy. Deleting the App removes this local data.
3.6 What we do not collect
- We do not require you to create an account to use the App.
- We do not collect your precise location, contacts, health data, or microphone input.
- We do not use third-party advertising SDKs, and we do not perform cross-app or cross-site tracking.
- We do not knowingly collect data from children (see Section 12).
4. Why we use your data, and our legal basis
| Purpose | Data used | Legal basis (GDPR Art. 6) |
|---|---|---|
| Providing the App and its AI features | Photos and prompts, technical data | Performance of a contract, Art. 6(1)(b) |
| Activating, restoring and managing subscriptions | Purchase metadata, pseudonymous identifier | Performance of a contract, Art. 6(1)(b) |
| Camera access | Photos you capture | Your consent given in the iOS permission prompt, Art. 6(1)(a), withdrawable at any time |
| Keeping the Service stable and secure, diagnosing crashes, preventing abuse of the AI endpoints | Technical and diagnostic data, server logs | Legitimate interests, Art. 6(1)(f) |
| Answering support requests | Support communications | Performance of a contract and legitimate interests, Art. 6(1)(b) and (f) |
| Meeting legal, tax and accounting obligations | Transaction records | Legal obligation, Art. 6(1)(c) |
5. Who we share data with
We do not sell your data and we do not disclose it for advertising. We use a small number of vetted service providers who process data on our behalf under written data processing agreements:
| Provider | What it does | Data it receives |
|---|---|---|
| Apple Inc. (App Store, In-App Purchase) | Distribution and payment processing | Payment and account data, handled by Apple under Apple’s own privacy policy |
| Adapty Tech Inc. (subscription management) | Paywall configuration, subscription status, purchase restoration, aggregate subscription analytics | Purchase metadata, pseudonymous app user identifier, basic device data |
| OpenAI (AI processing) | Image and text analysis behind the scan, appraisal, repair and project-generation features | The photo and text you submit, transiently, via the API; not used for model training |
| Hosting and database provider for api.skillwood.ai | Running our backend and content database | Request data, technical logs |
| In-app support chat provider | Live support conversations | The messages you send and basic session data |
We may also disclose data where we are legally required to do so — for example in response to a valid order from a competent authority — or where necessary to establish, exercise or defend legal claims. If our business is transferred or reorganised, data may be transferred as part of that transaction, subject to this Policy.
6. AI-generated results
Results produced by the AI features — wood identification, valuation, repair suggestions and generated project plans — are automated estimates for general information only. They are not professional advice, they can be wrong, and they must be checked against your own measurements, materials and judgement before you cut, build, buy, sell or repair anything. These features do not produce legal effects concerning you and do not constitute automated decision-making within the meaning of Article 22 GDPR.
7. How long we keep data
- Photos and prompts submitted to AI tools: not retained after the result is returned. Technical logs that may transiently contain request data are kept for a maximum of 30 days and then deleted.
- Subscription metadata: for the life of the subscription and for as long afterwards as needed to handle restores, disputes and statutory accounting obligations (up to 10 years under Italian law for transaction records).
- Technical and diagnostic logs: typically up to 30 days, in aggregated or truncated form where possible.
- Support correspondence: up to 24 months after the request is closed.
- Data stored on your device: until you delete it in the App or uninstall the App.
8. International transfers
We are established in Italy, and some of our providers are located outside the European Economic Area, including in the United States. Where data is transferred outside the EEA, we rely on the European Commission’s Standard Contractual Clauses, an adequacy decision (such as the EU–US Data Privacy Framework, where the provider is certified), and additional technical safeguards such as encryption in transit. You may request further information about these safeguards at support@skillwood.ai.
9. Security
We use encryption in transit (TLS) for all communication between the App and our servers, restrict access to production systems to the people who need it, and keep our dependencies up to date. Purchase processing is handled entirely by Apple. No method of transmission or storage is completely secure, so we cannot guarantee absolute security; if a personal data breach occurs that is likely to result in a high risk to your rights, we will notify the competent supervisory authority and affected users as required by Articles 33 and 34 GDPR.
10. Your rights
Subject to the conditions in applicable law, you have the right to:
- access the personal data we hold about you and obtain a copy of it;
- have inaccurate data corrected;
- have your data erased;
- restrict or object to processing based on our legitimate interests;
- receive your data in a portable, machine-readable format;
- withdraw consent (for example camera access) at any time, without affecting processing already carried out;
- lodge a complaint with a supervisory authority — in Italy, the Garante per la protezione dei dati personali (www.garanteprivacy.it) — or with the authority where you live.
To exercise any of these rights, write to support@skillwood.ai. We answer within 30 days; where a request is complex we may extend that period by up to two further months and will tell you if we do. Because the App can be used without an account, we may need additional information — such as the Apple transaction identifier of your purchase — to locate data relating to you. Requests are free of charge unless they are manifestly unfounded or excessive.
11. How to delete your data
- Data on your device: delete individual items in the App, or uninstall the App to remove all local data.
- Data on our servers: email support@skillwood.ai from the address you contacted us from, or include your Apple transaction identifier, and we will delete the data associated with you and confirm when it is done.
- Your subscription: deleting data does not cancel a subscription. Cancel in Settings → [your name] → Subscriptions on your Apple device.
12. Children’s privacy
SkillWood involves woodworking with sharp and powered tools and is intended for adults. The Service is not directed to children, and we do not knowingly collect personal data from anyone under 16 (or under the higher age of digital consent in your country). If you believe a child has provided us with personal data, contact support@skillwood.ai and we will delete it promptly.
13. Notice to United States residents
We do not sell personal information and we do not share it for cross-context behavioural advertising, as those terms are defined under the California Consumer Privacy Act as amended by the CPRA. We do not process sensitive personal information for the purpose of inferring characteristics. California, Colorado, Connecticut, Virginia and other US state residents may exercise their rights to know, correct, delete and opt out — and their right not to be discriminated against for doing so — by writing to support@skillwood.ai. An authorised agent may submit a request on your behalf with proof of authorisation.
14. Third-party links and services
The App and our website may link to third-party sites and services that we do not control. Their privacy practices are governed by their own policies, and we encourage you to read them. This Policy applies only to SkillWood.
15. Changes to this Policy
We may update this Privacy Policy from time to time. The “Last updated” date at the top shows the current version, and material changes will be notified in the App or by other appropriate means before they take effect. Continuing to use the Service after an update means you accept the revised Policy.
